Off Camp Leach Road, tucked back in a line of greenhouses, a wealth of herbs can found. Some are medicinal; some are used as spices, others are decorative; still others ward off mosquitoes. Saturday, these herbs of Raindrop Ridge Farm are all coming to town for Washington Garden Club’s annual herb sale at the North Carolina Estuarium.

“We have 69 different varieties of herbs. We have hundreds of herbs to sell. Some, I don’t even know what they’re used for,” laughed herb sale organizer Mary Pat Musselman.

The herbs are grown and delivered by Dorita Boyd, owner of Raindrop Ridge; other items for sale include pass-along plants that garden club members have uprooted and repotted from their own gardens, as well as gently used gardening equipment.

“(Boyd) comes in and provides us with just wonderful herbs. That woman is a miracle grower,”

Musselman said. “It’s sort of like a little garage sale with the theme of gardening — anything that has to do with a garden or flowers.”

The herb sale is the garden club’s main fundraiser for the year. Its proceeds fund the club’s field trips, such as this year’s excursion to N.C. State University’s Arboretum and the farmers’ market in Raleigh, as well as pay for gift certificates for scheduled speakers at the club’s monthly meetings.

The sale is not only an opportunity to pick up a few herbs, but a chance to learn more about the uses and care of the plants, according to Musselman.

“We have so many wonderful people who know so many things about herbs. (Garden Club members) will be there, so if people have questions, they can ask our members,” she said.

The herb sale is located in the Estuarium’s Nature Room (on the river side of the building) and runs from 9:30 a.m. until 1 p.m.

Unsold herbs will be returned to the farm, but Musselman is hoping for a turnout similar to past herb sales.

“I’m keeping my fingers crossed that we sell a lot,” she said.
