John “Johnny” Franklin Roberts

Johnny Roberts, 47, of Engelhard, died Monday, Dec. 24, 2018, at his residence.

Born in Craven County, March 5, 1971, he was the son of Patricia Toler, of New Bern, and Ricky Roberts and stepmother Mary Roberts, of Mappsville, Virginia. He was married to the former Beverly “Genia” Gibbs Roberts who survives.

Johnny was a commercial fisherman who loved hunting, listening to music, children and spending time with his wife and his faithful companion, Kash.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 29, 2018, at Pleasant Grove Church of Christ. Steven Mills will officiate.

In addition to his wife, surviving are his paternal grandparents, Susie and Richard Roberts, of Grantsboro; a brother, Jared Roberts, and his companion Cameron Gibbs, of Engelhard; one sister, Jenny Roberts, of Grantsboro; two half-sisters, Laura Roberts and Sarah Roberts, of Mappsville, Virginia: two stepsisters, Karmen Mersengille, of Greenbackville, Virginia, and Morgan Bowles, of Virginia Beach; two aunts, Debra Rowe, of Grantsboro, and Shirley Long, of Washington; one uncle, James Ireland, of Broadway; three nieces, Carley Roberts, Tiffaney Webber, Brittney Webber; one great-niece, SaRhia Barrow; a nephew, Ledarius Barnett; mother and father in-law, Gene and Debbie Gibbs; and a sister-in-law, Tammy Brooks, all of Engelhard.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Josh Roberts; stepfather, Daniel Toler; and his maternal grandparents, Shirley and Derwood Ireland.

The family will receive friends immediately following the service.
