Preparation for crop drainage

The operator of this excavator was busy last week cleaning out ditches before planting soybeans on a farm near Columbia. Adequate cropland drainage, and the threat of flooding, are always concerns in Tyrrell County where the U.S. Soil Conservation Service reports elevations above sea level ranging from two feet along Alligator River to 17 feet in the Newlands section near Lake Phelps.
