Down East Seniors hear stories of Washington past

The Down East Seniors Club met at The Blind Center of North Carolina on Wednesday at 10 a.m. The meeting was called to order by President Charles Smith, and Jim Hackney played the piano for the singing of “God Bless America.” The Pledge of Allegiance was followed by a prayer by Mike Gwynn. Ed Hamrick provided factoids followed by humor by Hackney.

Roy Whichard introduced Harold Robinson Jr., who presented the program. Harold, a native of Washington and popular columnist for the Washington Daily News, told of his experiences growing up in Washington in the 1950s and 1960s, as well as his years as the head football coach at Williamston High School and on the football coaching staff at East Carolina University. The 50/50 drawing was won by Smith.

Next week, Bobby Hodges of Paul Funeral Home will present the program about pre-planning our funerals. The Down East Seniors are a group of retired men from across Beaufort County who enjoy fellowship, coffee and  pastries, and a good program weekly at The Blind Center, located at the corner of Third and Harvey Streets. All older men are invited to attend.
