helps educate people
about Red Cross’ roles

When it comes to raising money for the Beaufort County chapter of the American Red Cross, the Spring Fling is just the thing.
The chapter’s fifth-annual Spring Fling — a dinner-and-dance fundraiser — was held Friday night to celebrate the conclusion of Red Cross Month.
The chapter received record donations from area contributors through the Heroes Campaign, a new promotion that benefits the nonprofit organization.
Fenn is impressed by the outpouring of donations.
Businesses recognized as hero-level sponsors included PCS Phosphate, Washington Daily News, Impressions Marketing, St. Clair Trucking and the Beaufort County Disaster Action Team.
The Beaufort County Disaster Action Team, which has 16 volunteer members, raised a significant amount of money busing tables at restaurants.
The team, which was formed over a year and a half ago, sends volunteers to area disasters and disasters across the nation.
As part of the evening’s festivities, the chapter’s Hometown Hero award was given to Disaster Action Team member Curtis Ormond. Fenn said Ormond received the award for his leadership in the organization.
The Beaufort County chapter is expanding to Hyde, Tyrrell and Washington counties, according to Fenn. Ormond believes there is an immediate need for Red Cross representation in those neighboring counties.
Although Ormond has been instrumental in the expansion of the chapter, he was shocked by the award presented to him.
At last year’s Spring Fling, the award was presented to Johnie Williams, disaster-services coordinator and member of the board of directors for the Beaufort County chapter.
After Ormond and Williams were recognized for their contributions to the chapter, the Craig Woolard Band took the stage. Woolard, a native of Washington, said it’s an honor for him to play shows like the Spring Fling.
Woolard has played at the Spring Fling before. Woolard said he’s always impressed by the turnout for the event.
