Mr. Alton Gray Ausbon

GREENVILLE — Mr. Alton Gray Ausbon, 74, died Wednesday, May 7, 2008.
The funeral service will be conducted Saturday at 4 p.m. in the Wilkerson Funeral Chapel. Burial will follow in Pinewood Memorial Park.
Mr. Ausbon was born to Leroy and Mary Bailey Ausbon on March 29, 1934 at the home place in Beaufort County. He was the fourth child of nine children, and was a graduate of Bear Grass School in 1953. After graduation, he worked with his dad on the farm for a short period, joining the United States Army in 1956 until 1958. On December 1, 1960 he married Mildred Ayers, and they were blessed with two children, Michael and Amy Ausbon. After working for Burroughs Welcome for 25 years, he retired in December of 1994. Alton enjoyed gardening, fishing, and auctions. He was a member of the Gideon organization, and Ruritan Club. He had a great love of animals, especially his dogs, Zack, and Lady, and cats, Miss Muffin and Big Molly. Alton became a member of the Piney Grove Free Will Baptist Church in Beaufort County in 1949. His service to the church extended many years; he was Church Clerk for 52 years, Sunday School Superintendent for 42 years, Sunday School Teacher and Deacon for 47 years, and Deacon Chairman for 22 years.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Lee Roy and Mary Bailey Ausbon, brothers, James R. Ausbon and Burnace R. Ausbon, and three sisters, Mary Wheatcraft, Lillie Fulford and Shirley Revels.
He is survived by his: wife of 47 years, Mildred Ayers Ausbon; daughter, Amy Ausbon Grimes and husband, Branton, of Knightdale; son, Michael Ausbon, of Fuquay-Varina; brothers, Steve Ausbon and wife, Karen, all of Greenville and Wayne Ausbon of Capron, Va.; sister, Sadie Gurkin and husband, Billy, of Greenville; and a number of nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends Friday from 7 to 9 p.m. at Wilkerson Funeral Home
