Myrtle Spencer Sawyer, 93, of 911 Beulah Road, Scranton, died Friday, July 25, 2008, at Cross Creek Health Care in Swan Quarter.
Born in Hyde County, January 30, 1915, she was the daughter of the late George W. and Blanch Carawan Spencer. She graduated from the former Sladesville High School and was married to Harry Sawyer Sr. on October 27, 1933. He preceded her in death on May 4, 1970. She operated a general store for more than 30 years, was a loving and devoted mother and grandmother and was a member of Eunice Chapel Church of Christ where she was active in the Ladies Friendship Circle for more than 45 years.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at Eunice Chapel Church of Christ. Pastor Thomas Biggs will officiate and Lemmie Davenport, her son-in-law, will share in the service. Burial will follow in the Sladesville Missionary Baptist Church Cemetery.
Surviving are two sons, Harry Sawyer Jr. and wife, Sandra, and George “Georgie” L. Sawyer and wife, Miriam, all of Scranton; six daughters, Agnes S. Gibbs, Shelby S. Williams and husband, Willie, Becky S. Davenport and husband, Lemmie, all of Scranton, Linda S. Modlin and husband, Bud, of Pinetown, Sandra S. Brooks and husband, Ted, of Edenton and Myrtle S. Kirk and husband, Tommy, of Belhaven; a sister, Evelyn S. Carawan of Scranton; 24 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren and 18 great-great grandchildren.
She was also preceded in death by a son, Richard; a brother, Harold Spencer; grandchildren, Jeffrey Brooks and T. J. Kirk; a great-grandchild, Ryan Sawyer.
The family expresses their deepest appreciation to Community Home Care and Hospice for the excellent care provided for Mrs. Sawyer.
Flowers are welcomed or memorials may be sent to Eunice Chapel Church of Christ Building Fund, c/o Murl Gibbs, 4549 Loop Road, Scranton, NC 27875.
The family will receive friends at Bryan Funeral Service in Swan Quarter on Sunday, 4 p.m. to 6 p.m., and other times at the home.
