Mr. James E. Barnett, age 64, of 480 Pike Rd., Pantego died Monday September 15, 2008 at his home in the loving arms of his wife and daughter Angela after a three month battle with cancer.
A memorial service will be held Friday, September 19, 2008 at 11 a.m. in the chapel of Paul Funeral Home in Belhaven and will be conducted by Rupert Wallace. Committal services with Military Honors will follow at the Davis Cemetery.
James was born in Elizabeth City Co., VA on April 23, 1944 to the late Etheridge and Hazel Woolard Barnett. He was a graduate of Great Bridge High School in Chesapeake, VA and then went on to join the United States Marine Corps. Mr. Barnett served in the Marine Attack Squadron 223 and Marine Air Reserve at NAS, Norfolk, Virginia for 10 years with an honorable discharge. James and Cecelia were married on July 19, 1997 in Edenton, NC where they lived for 18 years. James was later employed at Swann Oil, Inc. as terminal utility and operations manager. After 20 years there with Teamsters Council No. 83 of Virginia he then worked for several developers building custom homes as construction project manager from which he retired in 2006 and went on to live at the old Dunbar Farm with his wife Cecelia where they enjoyed deeply.
Survivors include his wife Cecelia Dunbar Barnett of their home, one son, James Wade Barnett and wife Janie of Chesapeake, VA, two daughters, Yvonne J. Harrelson and husband Larry of McBee, SC, Angela Faith Miles and fiance’ Michael Morrow of Hot Springs, AR, two brothers, William Barnett and wife Pat of Chesapeake, VA, Larry Barnett of Frisco, NC, two sisters, Verdia Cox and husband Don of Chesapeake, VA, Janice Miles of Winchester, VA, six grandchildren, Kristen, Brandon, and Ashley Barnett of Virginia and Janet, Joshua and Justin Harrelson of South Carolina and also many nieces and nephews. James was preceded in death by one brother, Kenneth Barnett.
The family will receive friends and family from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. Thursday September 18, 2008 at their home at 480 Pike Rd., Pantego.
The family and special friends will always remember James mostly by his special name “JJ” given many years ago by his children and co-workers. The family would like to give a special thank you to all who gave so much love, support and visits. The blessings and prayers given will not ever be forgotten. A special thanks to all the nurses, doctors and Community Hospice for the personal and wonderful care they gave to us.
