Mr. Heber Edwin Hayes, 88, of Aurora, died Sunday, Jan. 11, 2009, at home.
His body was donated to the East Carolina University Brody School of Medicine. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday in Mary’s Chapel in the Small community.
Mr. Hayes was the son of the late Allison B. and Lena Mixon Hayes. He was a Navy veteran, having served during World War II and the Korean War. He retired after 29 years of service, then worked in civil service in New Jersey. He was married to Rockie Rose Hayes, who preceded him in death. He later married Lessie Hayes, who survives.
Survivors include one daughter, June Hayes Wagner; two sons, Clifton Edwin Hayes and Allison Craig Hayes; one grandchild; his siblings, A.B. Hayes, Ruth Edwards, Ruby Bell and Margaret Jernigan; three stepdaughters, Pat Stilley, June Bennett and Gloria Stark; 10 stepgrandchildren; five stepgreat-grandchildren and one stepgreat-great-grandchild.
He was preceded in death by siblings, Julian M. Hayes, Opal H. Spruill and Billy Jean Hayes Rich.
