A Washington man’s drug charges got that much more serious because he was in possession of those drugs within a 1,000 feet of a school, according to a press release from the Washington Police Department.

Washington police, along with North Carolina Probation and Parole officers, arrested Gary Lee Kirkley, 56, of Wilson Street, Tuesday. Kirkley is charged with felony possession with intent to sell and deliver heroin within 1,000 feet of a school and possession of drug paraphernalia.

According to the press release from Lt. William Chrismon, spokesman for the Washington Police Department, during Kirkley’s arrest, police seized 30 dosage units of heroin.

Kirkley was incarcerated in the Beaufort County Detention Center under a $20,000 bond pending appearances. Chrismon said additional charges may be forthcoming.
