CHOCOWINITY — Unity Christian Academy students will be advising people to live dangerously tonight.
The school ends each school year with a program focusing on a theme students have studied throughout the school year. This year’s theme was “Unity in America.” Students studied politics, followed elections and took a trip to Washington, D.C.
The school blended patriotism, politics and standing up for what its students believe in — especially their Christianity.
“It’s supposed to encourage you to stand up for what you believe in and stand out because, in the end, it’s worth it,” said junior Olivia Maxey.
The finale was the toughest part for the middle-school and high-schoolstudents. They started rehearsing in April.
“Yes, the dancing, because they didn’t have rhythm. Some still don’t,” said history teacher Laurie Dixon with a chuckle.
Students donned fluorescent clothes and glowed under a black light as they danced to “Dangerous” by Group 1 Crew.
“I like this a lot because you have the dancers and the little kids getting to join them, doing their own thing,” said Abby Harbrige, a sixth-grader who dances in the “Dangerous” finale.
Harbrige also enjoyed the “Worth It” act, a drama performed by upperclassmen.
Tonight, every student in the school will be a part of the performance. Some students will break down the meaning of the Pledge of Allegiance, while others will pledge to the Christian flag, “and the Savior for whose kingdom it stands.”
Kindergarten students will continue a school tradition by reciting Ephesians 6:10. Students have recited the biblical verse about the armor of God every day since the start of the school year. Each kindergarten class learns it.
“I always get goose bumps when I hear them,” said Dawn Lewis, a UCA parent and the school’s administrative assistant.
She said this year’s show has such diversity, covering Christianity, patriotism and character.
Harbrige said seeing the show is a great opportunity for the community to come see what Unity Christian Academy and Haw Branch Church of Christ are all about.
“Maybe they’ll come to know Christ more and be baptized,” she said.
Unity Christian Academy is located at 1501 Haw Branch Road in Chocowinity. “Unity in America” starts tonight at 7 p.m.
