Little Washington Sailing School (LWSS) wrapped up it’s sixth season last Saturday with the Dog Days Regatta, sponsored by the Pamilco Sailing Club and Capt. Sam’s Boatyard. Dog Days lets LWSS advanced students compete in a series of races out in the Pamlico River.  The entry fees also raise funds for LWSS. There were classes of Sunfish, handicapped racing boats and the 420 class boats owned by LWSS.

The wind was very light on Saturday so only two races were held. LWSS had six students participating with Danny Mattison and Seth Woolard coming out the winners. Second place went to Sarah Haley and Abbi Hinshelwood. Chandler Norwood and Turner Johnson took third.

Great trophies of framed pictures for all classes were produced on the spot by Elbert Kennard of Coastal Photography.

The after-race social was capped with a drawing for an El Toro class sailing dinghy for which raffle tickets had been sold throughout the season. Chandler Norwood won this restored wooden boat often used by junior racers.

LWSS is a non-profit community sailing program in Washington, aimed at children aged 11 to 15 years old, regardless of their resources. It has ramped up over the years, teaching kids to sail and bringing our community together to support sailing, to engage in sailing activities and to raise awareness of Washington’s waterfront assets.
