ROCKY MOUNT — The Washington girls’ tennis team took a step in the right direction on Wednesday, defeating Northern Nash, 8-1, to lock up win No. 1 on the season.

After losing some of her top players from last season, head coach Miranda Whitley entered 2014 with many questions surrounding her roster. In a rematch with the Knights, the Pam Pack were finally able to get over the hump, sweeping singles play and losing just one doubles match.

The battle between Washington and Nash’s No. 1 players turned out to be one of the more entertaining matches of the day. After winning the first then dropping the second set, 6-1, Duckwall came back and powered her way to a hard-earned win in the third on a 10-point tiebreaker.

Washington’s No. 2 and 3 players also had their best outings of the season. Tara O’Brien defeated Chelsea Lucas in straight sets, 6-0, 6-1, while Sydney Harris knocked off Sarah Spain, 6-1, 6-1.

Logan Crisp (6-1, 6-3), Sydney Lewis (6-1, 6-2) and Nechelle Everette (6-0, 6-2) all breezed through their matches, locking up the win for the Pam Pack.

Doubles had been one of the primary areas of concern for Whitley’s team this season, but all three pairs looked sharp on Wednesday.

Jones and Spain locked up the only with for Northern Nash in pro-sets, 8-5, over Duckwall and Harris. But O’Brien and Lewis responded, knocking off Lucas and Macon Rollins, 8-2. Crisp and Everette won their doubles match, 8-4, over Nash’s Lauren Israel and Hannah Adcox.

Duckwall and the Pam Pack will look carry the momentum into Tuesday when they face Farmville Central on the road.
