SOUTHSIDE HIGH SCHOOL | CONTRIBUTED PHILANTHROPY: Southside High School raised $1,213.85 for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society® (LLS) during the week of Nov. 10 through Nov. 14. Funds were raised by hosting a classroom competition, raffling off a treat basket and collecting change in the parking lots after school on Friday. The Student Government Association organized this school-wide fundraiser as part of its charitable giving/character education program. LLS exists to find cures and ensure access to treatments for blood cancer patients. LLS is the world's largest voluntary health agency dedicated to the funding of cutting edge treatments for blood cancers. Red Lewis' third period carpentry class won the class competition. The average per student donation was $23.95. This class will be treated to lunch by Olive Garden. Olive Garden hosts the "Pasta for Pennies" campaign in its efforts to recognize students who participate in service learning and philanthropy. It is hoped that students can see the difference made through teamwork — working together to aid thousands of children and adults in the fight against blood cancers like leukemia. You can support SHS Student Government Association and its own efforts at fundraising by eating at Pizza Inn in Washington between the hours of 5 p.m. and 8 p.m. Monday. Southside SGA will be "waiting tables" for tips to raise funds to pay for a student section sign for athletic events and for operating expenses for the organization.
