MAKING A RUN: Cierra Wiggins leads a fast break and looks to make a pass into the lane in a game at North Pitt. Washington has a shot at a second-place finish in the 2-A Eastern Plains Conference and can even finish higher should the girls knock off top-ranked North Pitt on Tuesday.

GIRLS: WASHINGTON 42, SOUTHWEST EDGECOMBE 39

Washington outscored Southwest Edgecombe 11-8 in the fourth quarter to break a 31-31 tie after three periods of play. The win marked the girls’ fourth in the 2-A Eastern Plains Conference and puts them in a tie with the Lady Cougars for second place.

The homestanding Pam Pack jumped out to a 12-5 lead after eight minutes, but the Lady Cougars scored 17 in the second quarter to take a 22-20 lead into the halftime break.

The one-possession lead wouldn’t stand up in such a down-to-the-wire contest.

Daria Jones and Tierra Wiggins both scored 11 points apiece to help lead the Pam Pack offensively. Wiggins’ free-throw effectiveness (5-of-7) was important in the one-possession win.

Washington travels to Beddingfield on Friday before hosting first-place North Pitt on Tuesday.

BOYS: TERRA CEIA 93, RIDGECROFT 49

PANTEGO — Terra Ceia scored 52 points in the first half en route to a 93-49 decimation of Ridgecroft. The win keeps the Knights perfect in conference action as they travel to Lawrence on Thursday and prepare to host Pungo on Friday.

Quentin Van Essendelft scored a game high 24 points. Chase Furlough (21 points, 13 rebounds) and Tyler Hendrix (12 points, 13 rebounds) both posted double-doubles, which seems to be habitual at this point.

In total, five Knights scored in double figures. Ben Hubers had 14 and Messiah Barnes scored 10.

The Knights were deadly with their short- and mid-range shooting. They went 24-of-45 with their 2-point attempts. They added seven baskets from behind the arc, too, and were 55 percent from the field.

Terra Ceia cruised to the win after taking a 52-20 lead by halftime.

PANTEGO — Turnovers plagued Terra Ceia in a 33-28 loss to Ridgecroft on Tuesday. The shortcoming spelled the end of a four-game winning streak for the Lady Knights as they made a late-season push to climb back into the top three in their conference.

Catherine Meijer had a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds in the narrow loss. Rebecca Harrison added seven points, six rebounds and three steals, but also had 10 of the team’s 19 turnovers.

The Lady Knights travel to Lawrence on Thursday before concluding the regular season by hosting Pungo on Friday.

BOYS: SOUTHWEST EDGECOMBE 71, WASHINGTON 60

A lethargic first half cost Washington in its home contest with Southwest Edgecombe on Tuesday. The Pam Pack trailed by a manageable four points, 23-19, at halftime, but couldn’t match the Cougars’ second-half offensive explosion.

Sharwan Staton had one basket and Shaiquan Moore was held scoreless in the first half. The duo heated up as Washington’s offense began to click in the second half. Staton scored 17 in the second half and Moore had 14.

The Pam Pack, which scored 41 points in the latter 16 minutes, couldn’t keep up with Southwest Edgecombe. The visiting Cougars exploded for 48 points in the second half.

Washington sits second-to-last in the 2-A Eastern Plains Conference rankings and travels to Beddingfield on Friday.

STAYING IN IT: Northside guard Braeden Cooper moves the ball against a First Flight defender during a game earlier in the season. Northside is slipping in the conference standings, but isn’t out of contention for a top-three finish in the league.

PINETOWN — Northside was competitive with Jones Senior throughout most of Tuesday’s games. The Lady Panthers, however, took the entire first quarter to settle in, which cost them a 51-42 loss.

Jones Senior took an 11-3 lead in the first quarter. The Lady Panthers scored in double figures in each of the following quarters, but the early deficit and minor defensive struggles made it tough to come back.

Quortasia Clark and Mariah Stanley scored 13 and 12 points, respectively.

Northside hosts Lejeune on Friday.

PINETOWN — Northside had trouble slowing down second-place Jones Senior’s offense in Tuesday’s 74-61 loss. The visiting Trojans scored over 20 points in two quarters.

The game was within reach at halftime as the Panthers trailed 39-31. Jones Senior kept on adding to its lead, though, and never let the home side climb back into it.

Northside is competing for a top-three spot in the 1-A Coastal Plains Conference and hosts Lejeune on Friday. The Panthers will travel to Manteo next week as a buffer between Lejeune and their season finale at Southside.
