Students at Terra Ceia Christian School celebrated grandparents with its annual Grandparents Day program. Students from pre-school through sixth grade took part in the music program.
Music teacher Irene Vanderweit organized the program. She usually starts with the score of a musical. This time, she pulled together songs with meaning and tied them together with biblical verses.
The students sang five songs: “From Creation in Sensation,” “Praise Him,” “Woven Together,” “Child of God” and “I’ll Bring You Glory.”
Terra Ceia secretary and parent Amy Barrett said the music really tugged at her heart. She especially enjoyed the lyrics to “Woven Together.”
“You could see everybody in there was crying,” she said.
Barrett’s parents drove 250 miles to see their granddaughter, Anna Claire, perform. But, they did not travel the farthest. That honor went to grandparents who traveled more than 900 miles to be there.
The oldest and youngest grandparents were recognized. The program also recognized the grandparents with the most grandchildren at Terra Ceia.
“My mom was the youngest grandma there,” said Hayley Noles.
She and her class helped set up, serve desserts and clean up at the event. Noles said she was happy to do it because she got to see her niece and nephew perform.
Students were given the opportunity to give their grandparents a tour of the school and shared why they loved them.
Barrett said her daughter loved riding with her granddad on the Gator (a John Deere tractor) and playing Wii with her grandmother.
Vanderweit said the children have practiced for the program since starting school a few months ago. The time invested was worth it when she saw a room full of smiling grandparents.
“I love to see the gym full of grandparents,” she said. “They’re just special people.”
