Teenagers arrested after traffic stop

On July 12, 2014, Deputy Zach Martin with the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office was
patrolling the Pantego and Belhaven areas. At approximately 11:10 p.m., Deputy Martin conducted a traffic stop of a vehicle on U.S. Highway 264 near the Pantego Volunteer Fire Department.
Martin made contact with the driver and detected the odor of an alcoholic beverage.
While speaking to the occupants of the vehicle, Martin observed a rear passenger attempting to hide something. Martin instructed the passenger to exit the vehicle then observed marijuana in the rear floorboard as the passenger got out. Ten baggies of marijuana were seized from the car.
As a result of the stop, Deputy Martin arrested the driver, Da’Zaun Lee Jones, 19, of
Lee Street, Belhaven, and charged him with driving after consuming, less than 21
years of age. Martin also arrested the rear passenger, Gerardo Chavez-Castro, 16, of
California Street, Belhaven, and charged him with possession with intent to sell and deliver marijuana. Jones was cited for exceeding the posted speed limit and released to his mother on a custody bond. Castro was held in the Beaufort County Detention Center on a $2,000 secured bond issued by Magistrate Donald Sadler.
