Organic Gardening Class offered at BCCC
Learn to create a productive garden that will provide your family with healthy and delicious food throughout the year!
The Division of Continuing Education at Beaufort County Community College will offer a class in organic gardening 6 to 8 p.m. Thursdays beginning Feb. 12 and ending March 12 in Room 100 of Building 8A on the BCCC campus. The registration fee is $50.
BCCC’s Agribusiness Technology Instructor Billy Ray Askew will focus the class on growing vegetables using sustainable methods that are healthy for consumers and the environment. Techniques that students learn in this class can also be used for ornamental gardens.
Instruction will also include information on soil health, mulches, cover crops, safe ways to control pests, composting and extending the growing season. Students will learn to make Square Foot Gardens and hay bale gardens and will start some new plants to use at home.

African-American History in Washington and the surrounding area
Do you know about Sarah Keyes, Big Bob and Hull Anderson? If not, then this class offered by the Division of Continuing Education on African-American History in Washington and the surrounding area is for you.
The class will be 6 to 8 p.m. Thursdays beginning Feb. 12 and ending March 26 in Room 803 of Building 8 on the BCCC campus. The registration fee is $35.
Instructor Leesa Jones will relay personal stories about African-American citizens that have been integral to the history of our area. Starting in the 18th century and focusing on the years from 1850 to 1950, students will discover the social, political and professional contributions that so many unsung residents have made to live on the Pamlico River.
The class will culminate with a walk throughout Washington’s Historic District to see the places connected to the stories that have been told.

Popular crocheting class returns to BCCC
Learn to crochet an afghan or any number of other crocheted projects in this popular class offered by the Division of Continuing Education at Beaufort County Community College.
The class will be 2 to 5 p.m. Thursdays beginning Feb. 19 and ending March 26 in Room 830 of Building 8 on the BCCC campus.
Veteran crochet artist Linda Lewis will lead beginners and more advanced needle workers alike in choosing various yarns and hooks, reading patterns and executing basic crochet stitches. Beginners will work on projects chosen by the instructor and of their own choosing. Advanced students will choose projects and work with the instructor to refine techniques.
The registration fee is $35. A supply list will be provided to students upon registration.

American Sign Language class offered
The Division of Continuing Education at Beaufort County Community College will offer a class in American Sign Language 6 to 9 p.m. Mondays beginning Feb. 9 and ending March 30 in Room 826 of Building 8 on the BCCC campus.
The 24-hour course is designed to teach beginning American Sign Language. Instructor Dawn Brookins will cover alphabet, numbers, time, giving directions, nouns and other topics. At the conclusion of the course, students should have the knowledge and ability to communicate with those of limited hearing ability.
The registration fee for the course is $70. The required textbook, “Talking with your hands and Listening with Your Eyes,” is available at an estimated cost of $21.75 from the BCCC Bookstore before the first night of class.
