Travel to Canyon Country with BCCC Foundation

Space is still available for the for the nine-day trip to Arizona and Utah sponsored by the Beaufort County Community College Foundation and the Washington/Beaufort County Chamber of Commerce.

The fully escorted tour, Canyon Country USA, is scheduled for Oct. 10–18, 2015, and is offered by Collette through New Trends in Travel. The package includes hotel stays in Scottsdale, Grand Canyon National Park, Page, Ariz., Zion National Park and Las Vegas, seven breakfasts and five dinners during the trip, round-trip airfare from Raleigh-Durham International Airport, air taxes and fees, and hotel transfers.

The itinerary includes a flight from Raleigh-Durham International Airport to Scottsdale, Ariz., a visit to stunning Sedona, the South Rim of the Grand Canyon, Lake Powell and Zion National Park. The trip will end in Las Vegas, where travelers will spend two nights at the famous Paris Hotel.

Upcoming Personal Enrichment classes

Several classes in the categories of Wellness and Make It will be offered this fall by the Division of Continuing Education at Beaufort County Community College. All classes will be held on the BCCC campus. The schedule is as follows:

Yoga, 5:30-6:45 p.m., Thursdays, Sept. 10 to Nov. 12, in Room 102 of Building 4. Sharon Owens is a Kripalu Yoga certified instructor, and she will lead students to practice movement, breathing work and meditation to become present in the moment and fully alive. Registration fee is $60.

Self Defense for Women, 6-8 p.m., Tuesdays, Sept. 15-29, in Room 102 of Building 4. Students will learn how to evaluate the safety of their surroundings; how to avoid compromising situations; and how to physically react when they are caught in a trap. Registration fee is $36.25.

Welding for Fun, 9 a.m. to noon, Saturdays, Sept. 12 to Oct. 10, in Room 112 of Building 4. Students will learn the basics of Mig, Tig, and stick welding, and complete a project such as a fire pit by the end of the class. Registration fee is $111.25 and includes materials and safety equipment.

Papier-mâché Ornaments, 9-11:30 a.m., Monday and Wednesday, Nov. 2 and 4, in Room 830 of Building 8. Come and learn the old-fashioned art of papier-mâché while you make and paint several ornaments. Registration fee is $30.

Sam Taylor’s Tobacco Stick Stars, 6-8:30 p.m., Monday, Nov. 2 or 9-11:30 a.m., Wednesday, Nov. 4, in Room 102 of the Building 8 Annex. Each participant will recycle tobacco sticks to make one large star or two smaller stars. Registration fee is $26.25 and includes all materials.

Let’s Make a Wreath, 6-8:30 p.m., Thursday, Nov. 12, in Room 830 of Building 8. Participants will make one 12-inch wreath, one kissing ball, and gain the skills to continue their own wreath-making tradition. Registration fee is $40.

Scholarship recipients announced

The Beaufort County Community College Foundation has announced its scholarship recipients for the Fall 2015 semester. These scholarships are made possible by generous donors in the community, and they support educational opportunities for students who will become productive members of the community — tomorrow’s nurses, technicians, teachers, first responders, and more.

The BCCC Foundation has awarded 68 scholarships totaling $59,720. Scholarship recipients for Fall 2015 include:

Margaret Hodges Hackney Scholarship

Danisha S. Couther of Greenville is the recipient of the Margaret Hodges Hackney Scholarship. A student in the nursing program, she is seeking certification as a Licensed Practical Nurse and plans to work while becoming a Registered Nurse.

Established in 2005 in memory of Margaret Hodges Hackney, this endowment makes permanent Mrs. Hackney’s long-time annually funded scholarship in memory of her father, Ralph H. Hodges. The endowment makes awards to BCCC nursing students, with priority given to students in the Practical Nursing program who demonstrate financial need and academic merit.

Robert “Bobby” E. Farish Scholarship

Washington Business and Career Women Scholarship

Miriam P. Lamb of Pantego is the recipient of the Robert “Bobby” E. Farish Scholarship and the Washington Business and Career Women Scholarship. Lamb works for an insurance company in Belhaven and plans to use her degree in Business Administration to further her career.

The Farish Endowment was established by Rebecca Farish in 2005 to honor the memory of her husband. The scholarships are awarded to students in the business, criminal justice or automotive technology programs each year, and are based on need.

The Washington Business and Career Women Scholarship is funded by an annual donation to the BCCC Foundation.

Hannah Page Scholarship

Sara Elisabeth Moore of Washington, the daughter of Helen and Alfonza Moore, is the recipient of the Hannah Page Scholarship. She is seeking a degree in Medical Office Administration and plans to work for a doctor’s office or hospital.

The Hannah Page Endowment was established in 1999 by family and friends of Page, a faculty member in the BCCC Business Division.

Southern Bank Scholarship

Carolina Beltran, the daughter of Julio and Palmira Beltran of Belhaven, is the recipient of the Southern Bank Scholarship. She works as a production tech at Sesame Technologies and is working toward an Associate Degree Nursing.

The local offices of Southern Bank established this endowment to provide scholarships to students residing in the area of Belhaven and Bath.

John and Dorothy “Dot” Tankard Scholarship

Voris Evans-Thomas of Belhaven is the recipient of the John and Dorothy “Dot” Tankard Scholarship. She is enrolled in the Business Administration program and plans to start a catering business.

This endowment was established in 2013 with cumulative proceeds from the BCCC Foundation’s annual croquet tournament and support from the Tankard family. It assists BCCC students from the Bath area.

BLB Scholarship

Bernardo Ramirez Jr., the son of Bernardo Ramirez and Adelfa Lopez of Washington, is the recipient of the BLB Scholarship. He is enrolled in the Automotive Systems Technology program.

The BLB Endowment was established in 2006 to provide scholarships for students enrolled in industrial arts programs at BCCC.

Shereda Bailey Scholarship

Allie Truesdale of Arapahoe is the recipient of the Shereda Bailey Scholarship. She is in the Associate Degree Nursing program and plans to continue to work toward a Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing and a Nurse Practitioner’s License.

The Shereda Bailey Endowment was established in memory of a promising BCCC nursing student who dies unexpectedly in 2006, just three weeks before graduation. Funds were raised by fellow students, family and friends, and the scholarship assists nursing students under the age of 25.

Kimberly Anne and David Teeter Scholarship

Crimestoppers Scholarship

Tribecca Moore, the daughter of Anthony and Marie Moore of Washington, is the recipient of the Kimberly Anne and David Teeter Scholarship and the Crimestopper Scholarship. She is pursuing a degree in Criminal Justice and has previously earned an AAS in Computer Information Technology.

The Teeter Endowment was established in 1994 in memory of Kimberly Anne Teeter and expanded in 2009 to include David, the son of Ruth and Vernon Teeter.

The Crimestoppers Scholarship is funded by Beaufort County Crimestoppers and is awarded annually to a student enrolled in the Criminal Justice program.

James “Wyatt” Respass Blanks Scholarship

Lawrence L. Satchell Sr. of Washington is the recipient of the James “Wyatt” Respass Blanks Scholarship. He is a Tig welder at Camfil Farr and is enrolled in the Welding program.

The Blanks Endowment was established in 2005 with memorials and gifts from friends and family, and is awarded annually to a student working toward a two-year degree who maintains a 2.5 GPA.
