Scholarship recipients announced
The Beaufort County Community College Foundation has announced its scholarship recipients for the Fall 2015 semester. These scholarships are made possible by generous donors in the community, and they support educational opportunities for students who will become productive members of the community — tomorrow’s nurses, technicians, teachers, first responders, and more.
The BCCC Foundation has awarded 68 scholarships totaling $59,720. Scholarship recipients for Fall 2015 include:
Donald and Janet Bellew Scholarship
Wanda A. Sims of Washington is the recipient of the Donald and Janet Bellew Scholarship. A cook at Travel Store #5 and an event specialist at Wal-Mart, she is seeking a degree in Human Services and plans to transfer to a four-year university to pursue a bachelor’s degree.
The Bellew Endowment was established in 2005; Donald Bellew had obtained his higher education and wanted to make it easier for other night students to do the same.
Gladys Warren of Washington is the recipient of the Jody Parrish Scholarship. Warren is a student in the Early Childhood program and plans to seek a job in the childcare field to gain experience before starting her own business.
Margaret “Margie” Holder established this endowment in 2012 to memorialize her son, Jody. Holder was an early childhood instructor at BCCC and at times raised funds to help her students.
Washington Woman’s Club Scholarship
Tayloe Memorial Scholarship
Shannon Pake of Washington is the recipient of the Washington Woman’s Club Scholarship and the Tayloe Memorial Scholarship. The mother of three boys, she is working toward her Associate Degree Nursing and plans to work locally while pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Nursing.
The Washington Woman’s Club established its endowment in 1999, providing an annual scholarship to a second-year nursing student residing in Beaufort County who is willing to work in the county for at least a year after graduating.
The Tayloe Memorial Scholarship Endowment was established by Mrs. Sam Tim “Tay” Carter in memory of Dr. David Thomas Tayloe and supports scholarships for students in medical programs at BCCC.
Sierra Hansley of Washington is the recipient of the BCCC Trustee Scholarship. She is currently a nurse aide at Vidant Beaufort and is seeking her Associate Degree Nursing. She plans to continue working while furthering her education and hopes to eventually earn her Ph.D.
The BCCC Board of Trustees established its endowment in 1996 to generate an annual scholarship for a full-time student in a curriculum program who demonstrates financial need and leadership ability, and who maintains a GPA of 3.0 or higher.
Archbell / Wilkinson Scholarship
Denise “Denny” G. Bolafka of Washington is the recipient of the Archbell/Wilkinson Scholarship. She works as a habilitation tech with Pinnacle Homecare Inc. and is enrolled in the Early Childhood Education program. She would like to work for Easter Seals or possibly open her own center for special needs children.
Established in 1990 by Mr. John A. Wilkinson in memory of his uncle, Mr. J.E. Archbell, this endowment is now used to fund the BCCC Ambassador program, FFA scholarships, staff and faculty excellence awards, and continuing education tuition for faculty.
Tammie Lawrence of Washington is the recipient of the Tayloe Memorial Scholarship. A nurse aide at Vidant Beaufort, she is pursuing her Associate Degree Nursing and plans to continue to work toward a Bachelor of Science in Nursing.
The Tayloe Memorial Scholarship Endowment was established by Mrs. Sam Tim “Tay” Carter in memory of Dr. David Thomas Tayloe and supports scholarships for students in medical programs at BCCC.
Grey and Jarl Bowers Scholarship
Christine LeCompte of Washington is the recipient of the Grey and Jarl Bowers Scholarship. With certifications as an EMT, nurse aide and substitute teacher, she is pursuing an Associate of Arts degree and would like to transfer to ECU for a degree in Education.
Grey Worley Bowers was a native of Pink Hill, and Jarl E. Bowers was a native of Washington. They were active members of civic and social organizations in Washington. In addition to the scholarship endowment, their charitable contributions included bequests to St. Peter’s Episcopal Church and the George H. and Laura E. Brown Library.
