We are the solution to the litter problem

To the Editor:

I read the article about the neighbor down the street from me who wanted something done about the littering of the streets in the City of Washington. I quite often walk my dog that way and yes, the street and sidewalk are often littered. I used to live in Raleigh, and the same was true there. People just seem to think it is okay to throw stuff out their car windows. But it isn’t okay. It ends up on someone’s lawn or in the sewer. Where I lived, we had a wonderful gentleman that walked the streets of our neighborhood three or four times a week, and he would carry a grabber and plastic bag and pick up trash as he walked. I started to do the same thing, and I would do it here, but I have a dog to walk now also and it makes it a little difficult. I think littering is against the law, but it isn’t that easy to catch someone doing it; so, the only solution I see is if those who walk the streets are diligent and pick up the trash themselves, which my neighbor does.
