Seahawks win big on Senior Night

CHOCOWINITY—It was Senior Night for the Southside soccer team on Monday and the Seahawks honored their seniors with a 5-1 victory over Tarboro.

Southside (6-7, 1-0) were in control of the game from the opening whistle. The Seahawks pinned Tarboro (0-7, 0-1) in its own half of the field for most of the game’s opening half. Whenever Southside lost possession of the ball, the Seahawks quickly regained it by pressuring Tarboro into a turnover.

The Vikings finally crumbled from the constant pressure with 20 minutes left in the first half. Miscommunication between the Tarboro goalie and one of her defenders allowed Southside’s Samantha Rodriguez to swoop in and knock the ball in the goal for the game’s opening goal.

The Seahawks’ pressure didn’t lessen after the opening goal, as Southside began to pepper the Vikings’ goal with shots. Sindy Chavez increased the Seahawks’ lead to 2-0, receiving a pass from Yoselin Reyes just inside the box and firing the ball into the goal. Reyes scored a goal of her own soon after, and Southside took a 3-0 lead into halftime. Iyari Mondragon added two goals of her own in the second half.

Southside coasts to victory

PLYMOUTH—The visiting Southside baseball team established an early lead to brush past Plymouth 8-0 on Monday.

Southside (7-11, 3-6) wasted little time to score in the non-conference matchup. The Seahawks scored twice in the opening inning and added a third run in the second. Southside added some insurance runs late, scoring a run in the fifth and four more in the fifth.

Seahawk Josh Toler had a game-high two hits in three plate appearances, while also scoring two runs. Demetrious Ebron finished the game with two RBI, while Cody Modlin and Jarrett O’Neal both chipped in with one RBI.

Plymouth’s (1-14, 0-10) bats were stifled for much of the game. The Vikings managed five hits but tried to take advantage of every base runner they had by stealing three bases.

Modlin picked up the win for Southside, pitching 4.1 innings. The senior struck out four Tarboro batters in his time on the mound.

Seahawks dominant in win

PLYMOUTH—An enormous 13-run first inning set the tone for the Southside softball team, as the Seahawks defeated Plymouth 24-0 on Monday.

Southside (10-5, 5-4) didn’t ease up on Plymouth (0-14, 0-10) after the offensive fireworks in the top of the first inning. The Seahawks scored two runs in the second, five more in the third and capped their scoring with a four-run fourth inning.

Southside amassed 28 hits in the game, with seven of its starters having multiple hits. Mallory Noble led the way, going 6-for-6 with four RBI. Symone Ruffin was right behind, getting five hits and three RBI. Danielle Ruffin led Southside with seven RBI, while also going 4-for-6 at the plate.

Alyssa McLawhorn pitched all five innings for Southside, getting her ninth win of the season. She struck out 12 Vikings, while surrendering one hit.

The Warriors keep on winning

WINDSOR—The Unity Christian Academy softball team scored nine runs combined in the fourth and fifth innings to defeat Bethel Assembly Christian Academy 12-2 in what was a close game up to that point Monday night.

Unity (15-0) first took the lead, 2-0, in the first inning, but BACA (2-3) responded immediately with two runs of its own in the bottom of the first. A Grace Bumpass RBI-single in the second gave Unity its lead back, but it remained a tight game until the fourth.

Five straight hits with two outs scored four runs for Unity in the fourth, with the highlight being a Bumpass RBI-triple. The Warriors added five more in the fifth inning. Another triple, this time from Kaley Coltrain, brought in three of the five runs scored in the fifth.

Coltrain and Grace Rose led the way offensively for Unity, with both finishing the game 3-for-4 at the plate. Bumpass and Macy Main contributed with two hits each as well.

Main was in the pitching circle for all five innings to get the win for the Warriors. She allowed two hits and struck out three Eagles.

Unity wraps up its season with a road game at Oakwood in Greenville at 4 p.m.
