Remembering one of the WHS ‘greats’

To the Editor:

Thank you for allowing me the opportunity to let the community know of the death of one of Washington’s outstanding teachers, Susan Wellborn. Mrs. Wellborn died on May 5, 2017, at the hospital in Chapel Hill, after having had pneumonia along with serious heart problems in her retirement. Mrs. Wellborn taught English, was chairman of the department, advisor of the award-winning literary magazine and numerous other positions at Washington High School from Jan. 28, 1988 through Jan. 23, 2001. Colleagues just learning of her passing have all commented that she was one of the most outstanding teachers that they had known and considered one of the “greats” at WHS. Services were conducted by the Omega Funeral Service and Crematory in Burlington. Her golfing buddies held a memorial golf tournament in Hampstead, North Carolina, in October 2017.

Please join me in remembering a great teacher and friend.
