Driver charged with DWI in Beaufort County fatal collision

On Wednesday, April 3, North Carolina State Highway Patrol responded to a collision that resulted in the death of 44-year-old Williamston mother, Janine James. 

The collision occurred at approximately 11 p.m. on Highway 17 just south of the Martin County border, North Carolina State Highway Patrol confirmed. 

Izair Perez, 28, of Washington was traveling south on US 17 in a 2010 Dodge Journey and crossed the centerline colliding with James who was driving a 1000 Honda CR-V traveling north. James’ 10-year-old daughter was in the vehicle at the time of the collision and suffered minor injuries. Perez sustained minor injuries and was treated then released from ECU Health Beaufort Hospital, according to State Highway Patrol. 

Perez was arrested for driving while impaired. Felony charges are expected after a consultation with the District Attorney’s office.
