On March 22 at 1:20 a.m., a vehicle that had just been stolen from a residence on N.C. Highway 33 East in Chocowinity, was found quickly, when the driver stopped at Mike’s Mini Mart, according to a press release from the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office.

When deputies arrived, the driver of the stolen vehicle was standing beside the truck with a towel wrapped around his head, said the release.

“We believe he intended to commit some kind of crime on the property. Mike’s does have video surveillance,” said sheriff’s office spokesman, Maj. Kenneth Watson, explaining why the suspect may have been covering his head.

On seeing the deputies, the suspect fled immediately into the woods, but after a short foot chase, the man was apprehended, according to the release.

Sgt. Michael Sheppard charged Zachary E. Jones, 25, of N.C. Highway 33 East, Chocowinity, with larceny of a motor vehicle, driving while impaired, no operator’s license and resisting a public officer. Jones was held at the Beaufort County jail under a $4,000 secured bond.
