A Washington woman, after reportedly assaulting her husband, landed in jail with a felony charge when she assaulted one of the deputies who’d responded to the scene, according to a press release from the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office.

Lisa Fox Boyd, 37, of Wells Avenue, was charged with assault causing physical injury on a law enforcement officer and resist, delay, obstruct an officer.

The call to the sheriff’s office came in at approximately 5:41 p.m. Monday — the caller was Boyd’s husband, according to Maj. Kenneth Watson, spokesman for the sheriff’s office.

Sheriff Alan Jordan responded to the scene, along with Watson, where they found an intoxicated Boyd yelling obscenities and refusing to obey their directives. It was while Jordan and Watson were arresting Boyd that she assaulted Watson, said the release.

“Once you tell someone they’re under arrest and that person resists, controlling that person becomes critical — that way they can’t get to any weapons and injure themselves or others,” Watson said.

Watson did not require medical treatment for the open scratches on his arm. He said assaults on local officers don’t happen a lot, but happen more often than they should — enough that the N.C. General Assembly changed the law in 2011 regarding assaults on law enforcement officials.

“Prior to the statute revision, as long as we weren’t seriously injured, it was a misdemeanor,” Watson explained.

Now the same act leads to a Class I felony charge and possible jail time.

Boyd was held on a $5,000 secured bond set by Magistrate Jasper Mills. Lenoir County Detention Center is housing Beaufort County’s female and juvenile inmates until the Beaufort County jail’s electrical problems have been resolved.
