A Washington man killed Monday in a shootout with a South Carolina sheriff’s deputy has been identified as Mitchell Alanda StClair Jr.

According to reports from the Richland County Sheriff’s Office, sheriff’s office Deputy John Parker attempted to stop a suspicious vehicle in Columbia, S.C., around 10 p.m. Monday night. The suspect drove off, eventually running from his vehicle. Parker gave chase and returned fire after the suspect turned and shot at the officer. The suspect was identified as Mitchell Alanda StClair Jr. According to Richland County Sheriff’s Office, StClair was carrying enough marijuana on his person to have been charged with possession with intent to sell.

Autopsy results released on Tuesday by the Richland County coroner’s office showed StClair died from complications of a gunshot wound to the upper body.

Wednesday, Richland County Coroner’s Office notified the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office that StClair died Monday night. StClair has an extensive criminal history locally. The Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office has been searching for StClair since a May 13, 2012,  incident that landed StClair’s girlfriend and her daughter in the hospital. StClair was wanted on charges of assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury, second-degree kidnapping, assault inflicting serious bodily injury, possession of a firearm by felon and assault on a child under 12.

The deputy involved in the shooting is in counseling for the incident.
