A disc golf course could be coming to Beaufort County Community College by year’s end if the college can secure funding.

The idea of the course on the BCCC campus is still in the infancy stages, according to Jay Sullivan, vice president of research and institutional effectiveness.

City of Washington officials were in discussions late last year about a possible city-owned disc golf course at Jack’s Creek. However, that idea seems to have cooled.

Kristi Roberson, Washington parks and recreation manager, said the city had no comment about the Jack’s Creek course.

BCCC, officials have been in talks about a course on the administrative level, but funding has not been secured. Sullivan said BCCC is exploring donations and grant funding for the course.

“Once we receive the appropriate amount of funding, our plan will be to move forward with a full disc golf course of 18 holes, similar to the design of play to a regular golf course,” Sullivan said.

According to the Professional Disc Golf Association website, a barebones course will cost roughly $350 a hole. A nicer course would be around $1,000 per hole and a top of the line disc golf course would roughly be $20,000.

Jonathan Kuhn, an avid disc golf player for three years, and police officer at BCCC, is pushing for the course to be constructed.

“I’ve been here for a year, and when I got here I just realized the campus would be a wonderful place for a disc golf course,” Kuhn said. “I started talking to people around campus and they got it approved to be one of the physical education classes.”

Kuhn believes half of the holes would be in the woods and the other nine would be in the open.

“The president is on board with it, she’s excited about it, and a lot of people on campus are excited,” Kuhn said. “Some of the students are pumped up about it because it’s something for them to do between classes when they have a two-or three-hour break in between classes.”

Sullivan said the disc golf course all boils down to whether BCCC can finance the course or not.
