For most, this “observance” involves watching burgers sizzle on the grill or looking forward to an extra day off of work. But somehow, attention rarely focuses on the people this holiday was made to celebrate: those who died serving in the armed forces.

The folks of the Washington Harbor District Alliance intend to change this trend; Monday, they have arranged an entire afternoon of free, family-fun events along the riverfront to rally the community and give praise to the fallen soldiers.

“We can respect our troops, but also have some fun,” said Washington Mayor Mac Hodges of the upcoming events.

That’s the idea.

In previous years, Memorial Day activities in Washington were less prevalent, aside from the annual observance at Veterans Park. Something was absent from the holiday, and members of WHDA saw this void as an opportunity. One small gathering was meant to account for the entire day of reverence. The town mourned the lost, but failed to celebrate their lives. This year will be different.

“We’ve crafted an event that brings people to downtown Washington,” said WHDA Director Beth Byrd. “Especially the families.”

Byrd, along with other members of WHDA, brainstormed ideas on how to extend the festivities beyond the morning ceremony. It took some time, but what resulted is an eventful itinerary spanning from morning until dark.

The day still begins at 11 a.m. at Veterans Park, with Disabled American Veterans, Chapter 48, and Disabled American Veterans Auxiliary, Chapter 48, sponsoring the service. This is a time to honor all veterans, fallen, retired and active.

Soon after, the celebration relocates to the Washington Warren Airfield for the grand opening of the new terminal. Along with tours of the facility, Gen. Anthony Tata, secretary of N.C. Department of Transportation will speak to the public at 2 p.m.

Then, the day moves downtown.

Washington High School’s Junior ROTC takes to the waterfront with a marching demonstration, under the supervision of Colonel Meeks. The performance, along with a few guest speakers from the DAVA and American Legion Auxiliary, preludes music — a lot of music.

The 82nd Airborne Division Band of Fort Bragg will be playing various patriotic favorites for attendees from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. Following the band, Tata will speak again before Backyard Groove continues the music, playing into the dark before fireworks light up the Pamlico.
