Walter Merton Cutler, age 78, a resident of 386 N.C. Highway 92 East, Washington, went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Sunday Oct. 20, 2019. The Lord granted him his request to leave this earth at home while he was asleep in his own bed with his wife Betty Lou Elks Cutler, of 57 years, at his side.
Mr. Cutler was born on Sept. 20, 1941, the son of the late Merton Theodore Cutler and Drusilla Delone Cutler. He is survived by their four children, Kent Cutler, Kathy Boyd (Robbie), Kevin Cutler (Tammy) and Karen Jarvis (Billy); eight grandchildren, Christopher (Jennifer), Shelby (Philomon), Savanna, Thack, Haley, Reece, Cameron and Brantley; two great grandchildren, Asher and Dakota; one sister, Gloria Delone, and three brothers, Leland, Jerry and Donald Cutler. He had many of nieces and nephews that he loved dearly.  He was preceded in death by one grandchild, A.J. Jarvis, and daughter-in-law Michelle Cutler, three sisters, Eva Barber, Margaret Fisher and Maxine Cutler as well as two brothers, James Cutler and Sherald Cutler.
Mr. Cutler graduated in 1960 from Bath High School. He was employed by National Spinning and then for the City of Washington as their purchasing Director and retired after 33 years in 1998. Mr. Cutler was truly a God fearing man who was steadfast in his faith and beliefs in the Lord Jesus Christ. He served as a Sunday School teacher, treasurer, deacon and later became one of the elders of Woodards Pond Church of Christ for well over 35 years.
Visitation will be Tuesday, Oct. 22, 2019 from 6 to 8 p.m. and funeral service will be Wednesday, Oct. 23, 2019 at 3 p.m., both at Woodards Pond Church of Christ with his sons Kent and Kevin Cutler and minister, Eddie Gurganus officiating. Burial will follow at Oakdale Cemetery. Family will also receive friends at the home. Per Mr. Cutler’s request, his grandchildren will serve as his pallbearers.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly asks that memorial contributions be made to the Woodards Pond Church of Christ Building Fund. P.O.  Box 1302 Washington, NC 27889.
The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to Dr. Young, Dr. Shammas, Kindred Home Health nurses and therapists, Community Hospice and all of our church family that has been a part of our beloved “Papa’s” life for many years. One of his favorite quotes was “This is just our temporary home” and now he gets to go home where he has long awaited.
