Washington and Northside won first round state playoff volleyball matches Saturday afternoon and will advance to Tuesday’s second round.

19th seeded WHS (14-9) won 3-2 at #14 East Bladen, 3-2, in the programs first playoff appearance since 2018. The Pack jumped out to a 2-0 lead with 25-15 and 25-23 victories, before the home team answered with 25-21 and 25-23 wins to tie the match. Washington won a post-season match for the first time since 2014, 16-14 in the final set.

They will travel to Eastern Plains Conference rival and third-seeded Farmville Central for Tuesday’s second round. The jaguars won both regular season matches.

Northside drew the 14th seed in the 1A playoffs despite an 18-5 regular season record and swept #19 Union High School of Rose Hill, 25-15, 25-16 and 25-18. They will play at third-seeded Perquimans Tuesday.
