To the editor:

Why do so many people in Beaufort County insist on displaying their ignorance in writing regarding the proposed jail? Ask yourself the following questions? Do I want the criminals on the streets or in jail? Do I value my security and freedom from being a crime victim? Is it better for a judge to turn the criminal loose on the public due to lack of space or send them to an alternative county jail so the county can pay the alternative counties exaggerated prices to house Beaufort County criminals? Do you want your laws enforced or ignored do to lack of space and unfit conditions as regulated by law? You’re not paying for luxury housing for criminals, you’re paying for your safety, the safety of your neighbors and children, your law enforcement officers and correctional officers safety. The state legislators dictate what conditions need to be in a jail. Construction costs never go down. If you value your safety and freedom from crime support what eventually needs to get done. Nobody wants to pay higher taxes so build the jail and law enforcement facility before the cost goes up beyond where it already is.
