Girl Scouts hold carwash fundraisers

Girl Scout troops across Beaufort and Martin counties are gearing up to host a day of fundraising.

At least 10 troops in the two counties will host carwashes at various locations Saturday, according to Kim Boyd, troop leader of Girl Scout Troop 1016 of Chocowinity and media coordinator for Beaufort County Girl Scouts. With spring unleashing pollen and more opportunities for people to be on the go, the Girl Scouts chose to hold a seasonally appropriate fundraiser, she said.

Boyd said the carwash project is part of a mission to raise money to pay for countywide troop activities such as an upcoming Spring Camporee event.

Troops will also be contributing proceeds to the Family Partnership Campaign, a fund set up under the Girl Scout umbrella to help new members pay fees, according to Boyd.

“Basically, it’s a fundraising activity,” Boyd said. “A lot of times when Girl Scouts register, there’s an option for family members to donate a little money to help other girls register. It gives funds to those who otherwise wouldn’t have the fees to join or go on camping trips or do other activities.”

Boyd said fundraisers instill a sense of responsibility in Scouts, as they will be the ones interacting with customers, washing cars and handling donations. The initiative also aligns with one of the Girl Scout laws — to be a sister to every Girl Scout.

“They know that they’re coming (to do the carwashes),” Boyd said. “They know they have to do the work. They know the adults aren’t going to do it for them. They realize what they’re doing. Times are tough, and we don’t want money to be an object. You may be able to afford something but others may not. This is a way to give back to other Girl Scouts. This is a way of helping their fellow Girl Scout to be able to participate.”

The carwashes will be held from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. There is no set price for the carwash, but Girl Scouts are asking for donations. Among the locations troops will be hosting carwashes include: Bath Fire Department, Advanced Auto in Belhaven, Chocowinity Fire Department, Cypress Landing Gas Station in Chocowinity, Tractor Supply in Washington, Verizon Wireless in Washington, the old skating rink in Robersonville and Rose of Sharon Church in Robersonville.
