AURORA — A single vehicle accident in Aurora Sunday led to the death of the driver, Dennis Earl Fonville, 57, of Aurora.

At 9:15 p.m. Sunday, North Carolina State Highway Patrol Trooper C.E. Ashley was called to the scene about a mile outside of Aurora. According to Ashley, it appeared Fonville’s Ford Fusion veered across the center lane and ran off the left side of Idalia Road, struck an embankment and a guardrail before coming to a stop in a creek.

“It appeared he went left of center and didn’t make the curve,” Ashley said.

Fonville was found deceased in the overturned vehicle and there were no passengers.

The water in the creek was deeper than the car in some spots, Ashley said.

At the time of the interview, it was unknown whether Fonville’s death was caused by injuries received during the accident or was caused by drowning.

According to officials, speed is thought to be a contributing factor in accident. It is unknown if the weather also played a part.

“The road was wet, but it was not raining when I got there,” Ashley said.
