WALL OF MEMORIES: Coach Jerome Tyson and softball player Meredith Knox will join a long list of names as members of the Washington High School Wall of Fame.

A red brick wall, the newest addition to Washington High School’s sports complex, stretches from the end of the track to the beginning of the northwest grandstand, overlooking a field where some of the greatest athletes in school history walked.

In a way, the wall tells a story. Embedded in the brick are stone monuments, listing the best coaches and players ever to put on the coveted Pam Pack uniform. Some of the school’s best teams are also listed.

During halftime of the Washington-West Craven home football game on Thursday, football and softball coach Jerome “Piggy” Tyson and four-sport phenom Meredith Knox will be honored at halftime, both being the newest inductees into the Washington Walk of Fame.

And there may be no other players more deserving of the esteemed accolade. Knox was not only a four-sport varsity athlete, a perennial all-conference pick across the board and an all-state softball selection her senior year, but also a valedictorian and member of the National Honor Society. As her former coach Emily Pake put it, she is a “coach’s dream.”

Like Knox, Tyson seemed to have an engrained passion for sports. While spending decades coaching recreation sports, he spent most of his time as a permanent fixture on the Washington sidelines at football games. He also coached P.S. Jones football, Pam Pack softball and a mixture of recreation sports. Beginning as a ball boy under coach Bing Mitchell in the early ‘80s, Tyson spent decades bleeding the blue and white.

And of course, with the passing of legendary basketball coach Dave Smith, who served as the face of Washington athletics for over 40 years, this ceremony should bare even more significance.

Knox and Tyson will have their names chiseled into Washington history alongside Smith, as the Washington football team tries to carry on a timeless tradition by coming through with a win.
