BLEED BLUE: The Washington football team has been the county’s most successful program for the last decade. It’s also gone without a field house.

With 10 minutes to kickoff on Sept. 18, the team’s last home game, Washington stepped off the gridiron at Choppy Wagner Stadium following pregame warm ups and crowded around the southeast endzone next to the concession stand. As fans snaked their way through the mass of 40 kids in full uniform, attempting to find their seats, the players awaited the announcers’ signal. Finally, the blue and white smoke machines were ignited and the Pam Pack burst through the inflatable navy tunnel and back onto the field.

Like most high school football teams, rushing onto the field is a pregame tradition that pumps up the team and the crowd. For Washington, that tradition is about to get an upgrade.

In July, the school announced its plans to construct a 4,020-square-foot, state-of-the-art field house to be used by not only football, but other outdoor sports like soccer, track and field and tennis as well. The facility was designed by McGahey Design out of Garner and the groundbreaking ceremony will take place on Oct. 9 at 6:45 p.m.

Since 2012, the football team has posted an impressive 38-12 record, including a memorable state championship appearance last season. But for years, the Pam Pack has made do with a dated locker room and a sub-par weight room facility located on the second floor of the gymnasium. With the help of the administration, Beaufort County Schools and a charitable (and not to mention prideful) alumni base, Washington will have a new home come next season.

The fan base, as well as the various athletic programs, is more than deserving of the new amenities. On and off the field, the teams have represented the school with class and put Washington athletics on the map.

Outside of the football team, over the last few seasons, the soccer teams, volleyball team, track and field team and men’s tennis team have been among some of the top in the area, while the swim team has been one of the best in the state. Now, when opposing teams come to Washington, outdoor sports will have the facilities to reflect their accomplishments.

The field house and the on-the-field product is a testament to the continued hard work of the coaches and the players. The amount of effort and time put in by each coach goes well above the job description. Now, they have a new home of which to be proud.
