MEBANE — The Salvation Army of Alamance County is cashing in on the generosity of an anonymous donor for the third straight year.

The Times-News of Burlington reports someone dropped a Canadian Maple Leaf gold coin in the kettle in front of a Mebane grocery store this week. A news release said the coin was appraised and sold for $1,600.

Commanding officer Lt. Jimmy Taylor said for the past three years, a gentleman has dropped a gold coin into the same Mebane kettle, and later calls the Salvation Army to verify it was collected. Taylor said that for the previous two years, the donor deposited Krugerrands, which are gold South African coins.

Taylor said his chapter is trying to raise $150,000, and gifts like this help them toward their goal.
