EVENING ROUNDS: Beaufort County Community College is competing against other schools nationwide to win $100,000 in security equipment. Pictured, Jonathan Kuhn (left), a BCCC campus police officer, checks in with night receptionist Kenneth Worsley (right) before going on duty.

Beaufort County Community College was recently announced as a finalist in STANLEY Security’s Together for Safer Schools grant program.

The competition means BCCC could win up to $100,000 in STANLEY Security Installed products and services in order to help secure students and facilities within the campus environment if it receives enough votes of support.

BCCC is competing in the category of schools with under 8,000 students, and actually only has about 2,000 students enrolled. That means it is already at somewhat of a disadvantage when it comes to votes. However, the community at large could change that. One advantage that Beaufort County Community College has is the fact that it serves four different counties. If each student rallied the people they know or, at the very least, compelled his or her family members to vote, the school could have quite a good chance at winning. If most of the people in the four-county service area took the time to vote for this cause, surely the school would pull out a victory.

If acquired, the grant could provide the college campus with heightened and updated security. Currently, the school has a system capable of monitoring its faculty, students and premises, but in order to grow and become bigger, the school would need to update that system. This is the perfect opportunity to do so.

The outcome of this grant program could mean the difference between the college expanding or, more or less, being limited to its current capabilities in regard to security, as well as branching out/adding more buildings and programs. The school has already researched its needs as far as upgrading its security and is well prepared to implement the new technology pending the reception of this award. It is important to support BCCC in its endeavors to become bigger, better and more equipped to serve its four-county service area. Your vote could contribute to that end and make the school safer for all who attend, visit and work there.
