You’ve seen them along the roadside and circling fields using thermals to glide & swoop. They have great eyesight, and a heightened sense of smell that can locate carrion from over a mile away. Driving around Alligator River Refuge it’s not unusual to see a dozen or more. It’s the Turkey Vulture, one of nature’s cleanup crew that helps along the natural recycling system when another creatures dies. Turkey Vultures have an amazing digestive system much tougher than humans. When eating they’re able to withstand germs, bacteria and even toxins that might be fatal to us.
